Child & Family Serives of Northwstern Michigan
Helped raise more than $15,000 through online fundraiser.
When the world shut down and living rooms became offices, I decided to do more than master sourdough bread. Enter Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan (CFSNwMi), an incredible nonprofit I discovered through the skills-based volunteer platform Catchafire. They were looking for a copywriter to help reimagine their website and connect with potential donors at a time when live, in-person fundraising had come to a screeching halt.
Step One: Writing That Works
Melissa Ryba, CFSNwMi’s Marketing and Communications Supervisor, gave me my first assignment: update the copy across their website to better explain the wide range of services they provide. The old content was informative but lacked a sense of connection. My goal was to make it engaging and donor-focused while still clear, compassionate, and to the point.
The result? A web experience that spoke to prospective donors on a human level, whether they wanted to learn about services, contribute financially, or find ways to get involved. Spoiler alert: the nonprofit loved it.
Step Two: A Whole New Look
Pleased with the initial results, Melissa handed me a bigger task. This time, I oversaw a top-level website redesign to align with CFSNwMi’s refreshed branding. Think of it as giving the organization a digital glow-up that reflected their impact in the community. I collaborated with their team to ensure the new site was intuitive, visually polished, and made every click count.
Step Three: $15,000 Says It Worked
With the new website live, the next challenge was strategizing a digital-only fundraising campaign. Enter #GivingTuesdayNow. While in-person galas and bake sales were on pause, we launched a donation drive that turned clicks into contributions. The outcome? More than $15,000 raised to support CFSNwMi’s incredible work in the summer of 2020.
What I Did:
Website Copywriting: Rewrote key web pages to create a more engaging and donor-friendly experience.
Website Redesign: Led the strategy and execution of a site redesign that matched the organization’s new branding.
Digital Fundraising Campaign: Helped plan and launch the #GivingTuesdayNow campaign, raising over $15,000 during a time when every dollar mattered.
The Bottom Line:
I turned a pandemic-era challenge into an opportunity to elevate CFSNwMi’s digital presence and fundraising success. From words to website to winning campaign, it was a project rooted in purpose and creativity.
